Santiago (Cabo Verde)

Santiago is het grootste en belangrijkste van de Kaapverdische Eilanden. De officiële landsnaam is República de Cabo Verde. Santiago is 991 km² en telt bijna 275.000 inwoners. De Kaapverdische hoofdstad Praia, de hoofdstad (sinds 1770) van de archipel, ligt op dit eiland en heeft rond 62.000 inwoners. Praia is voor schepen op weg naar het Verre Oosten of Brazilië de geschiktste plaats om voor anker te gaan. Dat is al sinds de 15e eeuw bekend. Op 15 km van Praia ligt Cidade Velha (Oude stad), de oudste nederzetting op Kaapverdië gesticht door de Portugezen die zich hier in 1462 vestigden. Het heette voorheen Ribeira Grande. Om verwarring met de stad Ribeira Grande op een ander Kaapverdisch eiland te voorkomen, is de naam gewijzigd in Cidade Velha. Cidade Velha staat op de Werelderfgoedlijst. Santiago heeft een tropisch klimaat. Aan de oostkust zijn bananenplantages. Het eiland is vulkanisch. De hoogste berg is de Pico da Antónia (1394 m). Het bergachtige midden van het eiland is relatief neerslagrijk en daardoor het meest vruchtbare gebied van de archipel. Bij Tarrafal, in het noorden van het eiland, is een prachtig strand. Rond Rui Vaz kunnen mooie bergwandelingen worden gemaakt.

República de Cabo Verde is the official name of the Capeverdian Islands. Santiago is the biggest and most important island it is 991 km² and has almost 275.000 habitants. Praia, the capital since 1770 is here; it has about 62.000 inhabitants. In the 15th century it was already known that Praia was the best anchorage for ships on their way to the Far East or Brazil. In 1462, Portuguese settlers arrived at Santiago and founded a settlement they called Ribeira Grande. To avoid confusion with Ribeira Grande on another Capeverdian island this name was changed in Cidade Velha (Old Town). Cidade Velha is 15 km (9 miles) from Praia and it is a UNESCO World Heritage. Santiago has a tropical climate with banana plants on the east coast. The island is volcanic. Pico da Antonia (1394 meter high – about4500 ft) . Because of the rain, the mountainous area in the middle is the most fertile part of the archipelago. Near Tarrafal in the north is a beautiful beach and around Rui Vaz hikes in the mountains can be made.
